Fair Trials co-signatory of letter to INTERPOL regarding human rights defenders

editor - June 12, 2017

Fair Trials has joined with twenty five other NGOs in being co-signatory to a joint letter to INTERPOL, in reference to the case of Azerbaijani human rights defenders Leyla Yunusova and Arif Yunusov.

BF3-1106Leyla and Arif, a couple who have actively fought for human rights for dozens of years in their home country of Azerbaijan, were arrested in the summer of 2014, on politically motivated charges, and were held in pre-trial detention for a year, in which both suffered health issues. They were then sentenced to eight and a half years and seven years respectively. Following huge outcry these sentences were changed to suspended sentences in 2015,  and the couple fled to the Netherlands, where they were granted asylum.

The Azerbaijani authorities ordered, via the Baku Appeals Court in May, that the couple return to Azerbaijan for further court hearings as part of a re-examination of charges. There is much concern that the authorities will seek to use INTERPOL's wanted person alert system to force the couple to return to Azerbaijan.

In this letter we call on INTERPOL to act in accordance with their principles and be diligent in not allowing for their Red Notice system to be misused to the detriment of the human rights of Yunusov and Yunusov.

The full letter can be accessed here.
